refers to the deliberate degradation of quality

in online platforms and services,

a term coined by author Cory Doctorow

to describe how platforms become worse over time.

This process involves a three-stage cycle:

offering high-quality service to attract users,

pivoting to favor business customers,

and finally maximizing profit for shareholders

by extracting value from both,

resulting in a significantly worse user experience.
