Trolling is a popular, effective fishing method where one or more baited lines or lures are slowly drawn through the water behind a moving boat.
there we go. "troll" comes from "trolling" and has nothing to do with fantasy fiction. still the similarities over time as the expression morphed is interesting.

"dont feed the trolls"
a troll is someone whos "trolling" (fishing) for newbs (inexperienced at a message board or computer game) to make them into an ill mood, pretty much a psychopath.
